Trish Shaw
Lead Occupational Therapist
Rebecca Lowson
My journey in healthcare began as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and mental health difficulties. At the start, I was uncertain about my career choice before becoming a support worker. Working in health care was not my first choice as I was doing a tv and film media course at Leeds city college.
After gaining experience as a support worker, I wanted to further my professional journey by transitioning to a different role within the health and social care sector. At the time, I was only aware of the nurse route as a potential career choice. I learned about occupational therapy through a conversation with a family member; this conversation enhanced my decision to occupational therapy.
Once I learned about occupational therapy, this was the career for me. I loved the idea of being able to work with equipment that helps people with disabilities become more independent. By becoming an occupational therapist, I can use my creative skills to develop unique and holistic interventions such as nature-base therapy.
After completing my second placement in learning disabilities, I knew I wanted to continue my career in this field. Occupational therapy enables me to understand people’s daily lives and gain insights into their hobbies, social connections, skills and activities.

The University of Bradford has many cultures and diverse students, and I feel included and part of a global community. This rich diversity is one of the aspects I love most about Bradford University. The university also has an exceptional student support team, which I value the most.
The University of Bradford occupational therapy staff has been welcoming, warm, and incredibly supportive throughout my occupational therapy course. Their excellent field knowledge and readiness to assist with any questions have been valuable. The university is excellent at translating theories into practical skills, preparing students for future careers.
