How did you find out about Speech and Language Therapy?

I believe that there should be far more awareness of Speech and Language Therapists as I did not know about this career path in school. I began my journey having a strong interest in science and languages therefore I went on to study English Language, Linguistics and Spanish at University as my undergraduate degree.

Through studying Linguistics, I was introduced to communication disorders which caught my attention. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this in my undergraduate degree, but I still was not aware about Speech and Language Therapy as a career.

Following my undergraduate degree, I was not sure which job I wanted to go into. Therefore, I independently researched Speech and Language Therapy and attended an introductory session which provided information about the career.

I decided to volunteer at a hospital to gain some experience. This solidified my passion to work as an allied health professional.

Where are you on your career journey now?

I am now in my final year of my degree and I will be a qualified Speech and Language therapist by September 2021.

If you could change one thing about your career path what would it be?

Although I do not regret my journey into the profession, my path would have been very different had I had more career guidance and information sessions given by inspiring allied health professionals that loved their job.
