Nkem Ainsley

Who am I?

My name is Nkem Ainsley

What do I do?

I am a Dietetic Assistant working with the Diabetes Dietitians in Rotherham Nutrition and Dietetic Services. I am also an Associate Nutritionist registered with the AfN.

What did I study at 6th Form/college/University?

My first Master’s degree was in Health and Social Care and my second Master’s degree in Nutrition with Public Health Management.

What prompted me to work in dietetics?

My interest in Nutrition has prompted me to learn about Dietetics, hence my current job as a Dietetic Assistant.

I am hopeful that I will further my career in Dietetics by training to be a Dietitian.

There are so many aspects to Dietetics, so much more than I found studying to be a Nutritionist. I am excited to pursue this even further.

What does my day to day job look like?

My day to day job varies from:

  • Booking patients into allocated appointment slots
  • Meeting with the rest of the team to discuss clinics and patient care
  • I also do some group sessions where I give dietary advice to women with gestational diabetes and patients with type 2 diabetes. I am responsible for ensuring these group sessions run smoothly and patients have all the information they may require prior to the start of the group.

What I love about my job?

I can’t describe just one reason why because of how varied my job is. Every day is different.

Starting from peer support, working with colleagues, to meeting patients in our care and knowing that I have made a positive impact in someone’s life, no matter how little, it is exceedingly rewarding.

Any lightbulb moments?

My lightbulb moment is suddenly realising that career-wise, despite how long it’s taken me, I have found there is a niche in health care which I absolutely love doing, that being Dietetics.

Even though, I have completed 2 Master’s degrees, I am excited to further my studies in Dietetics and hopefully practice on a more global scale with the United Nations looking specifically at Food Poverty and Malnutrition.

How have I got to the position I am in now?

Oh there has been a lot of self-doubts, having a career break as a stay at home mum, and looking to go back to work as a Dietetic Assistant which was obviously different from graduating to practice as a Nutritionist.

It has taken a lot of discipline, volunteering, self-morale and coaching from friends and family in similar careers.

Often times, you need that extra bit of experience and hard work to get on the path you wish to be. I am pleased to say it is finally paying off!
