What did I study at A Level? Biology, French, and Politics
My first experience of physiotherapy was when I undertook a week of shadowing to learn about the roles of various healthcare professionals in the Adult Critical Care team.
At the time, I was studying for my A-Levels in Biology, French and Politics, with the goal of pursuing of a path into healthcare. I spent time with a range of professionals throughout the week and had the opportunity to observe respiratory physiotherapists treating patients on ICU.
I was amazed as I watched them suctioning and promoting early mobilisation amongst patients of different ages; this experience is what first sparked my curiosity.
Following this, I attended a physiotherapy open evening at the same hospital which opened my eyes to the broad scope of the profession and secured my interest, thus leading me to apply to university.
There was never a lack of positive experiences on placement as I was able to consolidate my clinical skills in core areas, implement theory into practice and see the impact we can have on patients
My first year of the degree was challenging as it was so different from what I had been used to in school and 6th Form. I quickly had to adapt to different methods of teaching, developing my practical skills and taking more responsibility as an autonomous learner.
Whilst it was an intense first year, it was rewarding to see the impact of hard work and perseverance. Throughout the course, my passion for the subject grew and this was enhanced by going out on placement which furthered my awareness of this continually evolving profession.
I had the chance to work in a variety of areas: MSK Outpatients, Medical Step Down, Intermediate Care, Acute Stroke, Burns, Frailty.
3 years later, I am graduating this summer with a job lined up in the same hospital trust where it all began!
