Catherine Stafford

Name: Catherine Stafford

Role: Speech and Language Therapy Assistant Practitioner at NLAG Goole district hospital and Apprentice Speech and Language Therapist

What apprenticeship are you studying?

I am starting the Speech and language therapist apprenticeship in September 2024.

How are you feeling about starting the apprenticeship?

I’m very excited that this is now an option and opportunity for me. The apprenticeship has allowed me to progress within my workplace. This is more accessible to me and much more achievable being a mum as well.

What has supported you to take this step?

I have developed the necessary skills and expertise to be appointed into my current role and establish my position within the NLAG Trust. This experience has prepared the foundations for further study and secured me a place on the Level 6 course which starts in September 2024. Although I have not yet started, I am very excited about becoming a registered Speech and Language Therapist.

The apprenticeship has allowed me to progress within my workplace. This is more accessible to me and much more achievable being a mum as well.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, what advice would you give?

For anyone considering training to be an allied health professional, I would advice looking at the apprenticeship opportunities available within your chosen profession. For me I know this was the best option as:

  1. From a learning aspect with visual learning due to the course being 60% work-based learning
  2. The opportunity to still earn a wage while being able to learn, study and progress.
